What does it mean to be a School Ambassador?
In order to better communicate with our multicultural school community, we have a team of volunteer School Ambassadors to assist us with community outreach. These bilingual Ambassadors are parents who serve as points of contact for our families who speak little or no English and may need help communicating with the school or understanding our programs. Some families in our school hesitate to get involved or miss important information and events because they fear they do not speak English well enough. As a School Ambassador, you can reduce their fear and help them feel more comfortable here at Daniels Run.
As a School Ambassador, you would…
Give us permission to provide your phone number to other families who speak your home language so that they can contact you with questions about school or the community. You can answer the questions, if you feel comfortable doing so, or you can relay the information to the Family Resource Center coordinator, a Parent Liaison, or someone else in the school office. Please note: As a trusted volunteer working with our families, you will be expected to maintain strict confidentiality with the information parents discuss with you.
Make occasional phone calls to parents in your home language to remind them of upcoming school events.
When you are available to attend school events, you would wear a special badge indicating that you are here to help families; the badge will identify the language(s) you speak.
Most of this volunteer work can easily be done from home or at school—whichever is easiest for you and fits in best with your schedule. There are various committees to choose from.
If you are interested in serving as a School Ambassador, please submit your information on the Volunteer Opportunities page, and be sure to indicate in the comment box what languages you speak.
If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Family Resource Center coordinator, Richelle Brown
at 703-279-8441 or [email protected].
Thank You!
